Visitors to the 2008 Swedish Festival
will see a huge new sign on the Viking Center building this year. The “Taste of
Sweden” sign will guide them to the location of the old familiar Grandma’s
Kitchen. Yes, the name has been changed but the menu will still offer the
popular old Swedish standbys (ostkaka, potato bologna, Swedish meatballs,
Swedish pastries, Swedish rye bread) and the best homemade pies in town.
Traditionalists will still be able to
enjoy the Swedish Plate which includes potato bologna, Swedish meatballs,
browned potatoes, rye bread, and a choice of salads. The new thing about the
Swedish Plate is that one of the salad choices will be frugt suppa (homemade
Swedish fruit soup).
Some Things New
For another new twist this year, “Taste
of Sweden” will introduce Swedish sandwiches,
a lighter alternative to the Swedish Plate. The sandwiches will be POBO Dog
(potato bologna in a hot dog bun) and Swedish Meatball Sub.
New name. New salad. New sandwiches.
So what else is new at the Taste of Sweden? The answer is – A LITTLE TASTE!
Sometimes “a little taste” is all you want, something to take home to remind you
of the Swedish Festival. Mini rye bread, mini tea rings, Swedish rosettes and
cookie samplers. That’s what will be offered at the Mini Bake Sale on Saturday
during the Festival.
Some Things Never Change
“Taste of Sweden” (formerly Grandma’s
Kitchen) will continue to be a gathering place for visitors and locals to relax
over a cup of coffee and enjoy delicious treats in air-conditioned comfort.
There you will see many of your fellow visitors taking a break in the atmosphere
of Swedish hospitality.
Many people who come to the Festival
have Swedish food on their minds! It might even be one of the top reasons they
come – year after year! Other people are just plain hungry and “Taste of
Sweden” gives one more choice for a meal or a snack, in addition to the local
restaurants and the Smorgasbord.
“Taste of Sweden” will be open Friday
June 20 from 5:00 to 10:00 p.m. and Saturday June 21 from 11:00a.m. to 10:00
p.m. offering old traditions along with new innovations.
