Carolyn Nordberg was chosen queen of the 49th annual Swedish Festival on Friday night, June 15, 2001, by the past kings and queens, better know as the Swedish Royalty. Her peers chose her because of her involvement in activities concerning the community, the school, and her church. Her involvement has definitely had an impact on the community and has even reached nationwide. She was quoted to say, "I didn't realize there was so much enjoyment in volunteering."
Following are the highlights of Carolyn's volunteer work:
* Carolyn has been chairman of the CIP for the past three years. She has worked many hours on the annual scrapbook, which is submitted to the State Department of Economic Development, and has helped Stromsburg receive awards for community projects.
* Carolyn was an organizer of the project to celebrate the millenium by planting 2000 yellow tulips in our City Square Park. She organized volunteer groups to adopt an area around a tree in the park and plant the bulbs. Each spring she also purchases, plants, and maintains the other flowers in the square.
* Carolyn has dedicated countless hours to volunteer work in our community. She has served on the Library Building Committee, the Library Finance Committee, and presently serves as secretary of the Stromsburg Library Foundation Board. She has volunteered many hours working at the library entering data in the new computerized catalog system, and doing whatever other work is necessary.
* At Swedish Festival time you will find Carolyn working at Grandma's Kitchen, and she was the Grape Krem creator at the Smorgasbord for years.
* Carolyn is a member of Salem Lutheran Church where she serves on the church council, is a member of the choir, and is the church librarian. She works with Bible School, and is a past Sunday School teacher.
* Carolyn helped develop the Web site for Stromsburg. Now all of the wonderful things about our town are available to be seen by people all over the world. The address for the page is: http://www.stromsburgnebraska.com .
* Carolyn was a teacher and librarian in the Stromsburg High School for 32 years. She has touched hundreds of lives throughout the years and continues to help students since her retirement in 1997 by doing private tutoring.
Carolyn is the type of person who gets satisfaction not from recognition but from seeing the finished product.
There is one more very important thing that needs to be mentioned. This accomplishment has touched and helped more people than anyone could possibly comprehend - and that is the work that she has done promoting organ donation and helping others faced with cancer.
Carolyn's grandson was diagnosed with liver cancer when he was 18 months old. He is a recipient of a liver transplant, and is now leading a very normal and active life.
Carolyn is always willing to give slide presentations to various clubs and organizations on the importance of organ donations. She has made many people aware of the need for this meaningful gift of life.
She composed a web page on Matthew's story that has helped thousands of people face the same problems. The address for this page is: http://www.megavision.com/matthew .
Carolyn receives hundreds of e-mail messages from people who read this story and she answers each and every one. Her knowledge and encouragement are very helpful to these people.
Stromsburg is a better community because of the volunteer work of Carolyn Nordberg. She seldom refuses a request for assistance, whether it is for the community, the school, or her church. And now, her efforts are going coast to coast because of her involvement in the organ donation program.
